Most delays in filing an income tax return come from missing paperwork, not from the return itself. Collect these documents early and filing becomes quick.
Basic details
- PAN and Aadhaar (linked to each other)
- Bank account details, including the account for any refund
- Login to the income tax e-filing portal
Income
- Salary: Form 16 from each employer during the year, and salary slips if you changed jobs
- Interest: bank and post office interest certificates for savings accounts, fixed deposits and recurring deposits
- Capital gains: statements from your broker and mutual fund registrars, and sale and purchase deeds for any property sold
- Rent received: rent agreement and amount received, plus municipal tax paid
- Business or profession: books of accounts, bank statements and GST returns
Tax already paid
- Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS) from the e-filing portal. These show TDS, TCS and high-value transactions reported against your PAN. We check every return against them.
- Challans for advance tax or self-assessment tax paid
Deductions and exemptions
- Life and health insurance premium receipts
- PPF, ELSS, provident fund and other investment proofs
- Home loan interest and principal certificate
- Tuition fee receipts for children
- Donation receipts with the donee’s details
Foreign income and assets
Residents with foreign bank accounts, shares, property or income must report them in the return even if no tax is due in India. Keep statements for the calendar year.
